Brief: The Horned King's transport vehicle. Something along the lines of a palanquin where his cult follower / minions caarry him if he ever needs to leave the castle. The palanquin is suited for him and designed only to be used by the Horned King specifically. Shape language focusing on angular and evil looking. Colors leaning towards, black, gold and red.
I haven't locked down yet on a specific culture I'll be referencing for the palanquin. I'm leaning towards an ornate gold work with the shape language seen in Indian culture.
10 Week Outline:
Like I said in the email I'd like to be focusing much more significantly through the term on my illustrations. That being said I'd like to try and get the design of this to be about 80% complete by week 05 so that I can do an illustration for the class throughout the weeks featuring the prop rather than spend 10 weeks on trying to get the absolute best and unique design.
Week01: General research and reference gathering, see what's out there. Blue sky sketching, 10+ Silhouettes and 5 sketches.
Week02: Specific cultural references, Select a direction on the shapes and general idea. 5 Sketches.
Week03: 5 Sketches based on feedback.
Week04: 5 Sketches based on feedback
Week05: Choose a final design with enough clarity that an illustration can begin.
Week06: 3 Value thumbnails
Week07: Add Color
Week08: Begin Rendering
Week09: Rendering
Week10: Finalize.
I think this timeline is better for me, rather than spending 6-9 weeks on design and then trying to rush out an illustration near the end.
Timeline looks good and the start of sketches is looking alright. I like #4 on the second page - has some interesting potential to it similar to the swan image one you included in your ref. The others are feeling a bit safe (#1 is feeling not very kingly and more like a gypsy/random goods transport carriage). Carry on!
